About YO-257 & San Pedro Wrecks
Two wrecks a short swim apart off Waikiki: the YO-257, a Navy yard oiler sunk in 1989 in about 100 ft, and the San Pedro, a fishing boat in 65 to 85 ft. Boat dive only; the area is used by tour submarines, so dive with an operator who knows the site. Turtles and eagle rays are common.
- YO-257 & San Pedro Wrecks is out in open water, exposed to swell from every side.
- Boat access only, from Kewalo Basin.
- Water 100 ft (30 m) deep starts about 0.2 km out.
- Blue water (300 ft / 100 m and deeper) is about 0.9 km out.
What spoils the visibility here
- Being offshore, it depends on wind and sea state more than on runoff: strong trade winds make the crossing rough.
- Heavy rain sends brown runoff into the water for a few days; Hawaii DOH posts Brown Water Advisories when it does.
Rules and wildlife
- Green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are protected: NOAA asks people to stay at least 10 ft (3 m) from turtles and 50 ft (15 m) from monk seals.
- Rules change: check Hawaii DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources before fishing anywhere.
