About Corsair Plane Wreck
A WWII F4U Corsair fighter that ditched off Hawaii Kai in 1946, sitting mostly intact on a sand bottom in about 110 ft. A deep boat dive for advanced divers; the wreck is small, so visibility makes or breaks it.
- Corsair Plane Wreck is out in open water, exposed to swell from every side.
- Boat access only, from Maunalua Bay boat ramp.
- Water 100 ft (30 m) deep starts about 0.7 km out.
- Blue water (300 ft / 100 m and deeper) is about 1.4 km out.
What spoils the visibility here
- Being offshore, it depends on wind and sea state more than on runoff: strong trade winds make the crossing rough.
- Heavy rain sends brown runoff into the water for a few days; Hawaii DOH posts Brown Water Advisories when it does.
Rules and wildlife
- Green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are protected: NOAA asks people to stay at least 10 ft (3 m) from turtles and 50 ft (15 m) from monk seals.
- Rules change: check Hawaii DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources before fishing anywhere.
