About Black Point
A lava point between Diamond Head and Kahala, with ledges and deeper water close to shore. Access is limited to a few public rights of way; entries off the rocks are only for calm days. Open to summer south swells.
- Black Point faces south (180°): swell from that side arrives head-on.
- Swim or kayak in from shore, or go by boat from Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor.
- Water 100 ft (30 m) deep starts about 1.4 km out.
- Blue water (300 ft / 100 m and deeper) is about 1.9 km out.
What spoils the visibility here
- South swells, mostly May to September, reach it.
- It is sheltered from the usual trade winds; Kona (southerly) winds and swells are its weak spot.
- Heavy rain sends brown runoff into the water for a few days; Hawaii DOH posts Brown Water Advisories when it does.
Rules and wildlife
- Green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are protected: NOAA asks people to stay at least 10 ft (3 m) from turtles and 50 ft (15 m) from monk seals.
- Rules change: check Hawaii DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources before fishing anywhere.
