About Waimanalo Beach
A long, white sand beach on the windward side, with patchy reef and sand channels offshore. It faces the trade winds, so it is best on calm or light-wind mornings; most of the time the wind chops it up and stirs up the sand. Lifeguarded at the beach parks.
- Waimanalo Beach faces east-northeast (75°): swell from that side arrives head-on.
- Swim or kayak in from shore, or go by boat from Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor.
- Water 100 ft (30 m) deep starts about 3.1 km out.
- Blue water (300 ft / 100 m and deeper) is about 4.7 km out.
What spoils the visibility here
- It faces the trade winds (east-northeast most days), so wind chop often cuts visibility.
- Heavy rain sends brown runoff into the water for a few days; Hawaii DOH posts Brown Water Advisories when it does.
Rules and wildlife
- Green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are protected: NOAA asks people to stay at least 10 ft (3 m) from turtles and 50 ft (15 m) from monk seals.
- Rules change: check Hawaii DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources before fishing anywhere.
