About Turtle Bay
Kuilima Cove, beside the Turtle Bay resort: a small cove sheltered by an outer reef, with an easy sand entry, turtles and reef fish. Public beach-access parking at the resort is limited. Outside the reef, currents are strong and winter north swells break hard.
- Turtle Bay faces north-northeast (15°): swell from that side arrives head-on.
- Swim or kayak in from shore, or go by boat from Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor.
- Water 100 ft (30 m) deep starts about 1.0 km out.
- Blue water (300 ft / 100 m and deeper) is about 4.1 km out.
What spoils the visibility here
- North and northwest swells, mostly October to April, hit it head-on and stir up the bottom.
- Heavy rain sends brown runoff into the water for a few days; Hawaii DOH posts Brown Water Advisories when it does.
Rules and wildlife
- Green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are protected: NOAA asks people to stay at least 10 ft (3 m) from turtles and 50 ft (15 m) from monk seals.
- Rules change: check Hawaii DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources before fishing anywhere.
