About Kaimana Beach (Sans Souci)
A small sand beach at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki, beside the old Natatorium, with reef and turtles just offshore. Easy entry and usually calm in the trade winds; south swells in summer bring surf to the outer reef. Lifeguarded.
- Kaimana Beach (Sans Souci) faces southwest (225°): swell from that side arrives head-on.
- Swim or kayak in from shore, or go by boat from Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor.
- Water 100 ft (30 m) deep starts about 1.5 km out.
- Blue water (300 ft / 100 m and deeper) is about 2.0 km out.
What spoils the visibility here
- South swells, mostly May to September, reach it.
- It is sheltered from the usual trade winds; Kona (southerly) winds and swells are its weak spot.
- Heavy rain sends brown runoff into the water for a few days; Hawaii DOH posts Brown Water Advisories when it does.
Rules and wildlife
- The Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District, where taking marine life is not allowed, ends at the Natatorium just west of the beach; from there to Diamond Head is the Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area, open and closed to fishing in alternating periods. Check DAR's rules.
- Green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are protected: NOAA asks people to stay at least 10 ft (3 m) from turtles and 50 ft (15 m) from monk seals.
- Rules change: check Hawaii DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources before fishing anywhere.
