About Lanikai
A calm, shallow beach behind an outer reef, looking out at Na Mokulua (the Mokes). Easy entry from the sand; the reef inside is shallow and often sandy, the clearer water is out towards the islands, a long swim or a kayak paddle away. Trade winds pick up through the day. No lifeguards, and parking is restricted.
- Lanikai faces east-northeast (70°): swell from that side arrives head-on.
- Swim or kayak in from shore, or go by boat from Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor.
- Water 100 ft (30 m) deep starts about 2.9 km out.
- Blue water (300 ft / 100 m and deeper) is about 3.7 km out.
What spoils the visibility here
- It faces the trade winds (east-northeast most days), so wind chop often cuts visibility.
- Heavy rain sends brown runoff into the water for a few days; Hawaii DOH posts Brown Water Advisories when it does.
Rules and wildlife
- Na Mokulua are a state seabird sanctuary: you can land only on the beach of Moku Nui; the rest of both islets is closed.
- Green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are protected: NOAA asks people to stay at least 10 ft (3 m) from turtles and 50 ft (15 m) from monk seals.
- Rules change: check Hawaii DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources before fishing anywhere.
