About Carthaginian II Wreck
A steel-hulled replica of a 19th-century whaling ship, sunk off Lahaina in 2005 as an artificial reef, upright in about 95 ft. Boat dive only, from Lahaina; turtles, eels and reef fish live in and around the hull. Tour submarines visit it too.
- Carthaginian II Wreck is out in open water, exposed to swell from every side.
- Boat access only, from Lahaina Harbor.
- Water 100 ft (30 m) deep starts about 0.7 km out.
- Blue water (300 ft / 100 m and deeper) is about 6.7 km out.
What spoils the visibility here
- Being offshore, it depends on wind and sea state more than on runoff: strong trade winds make the crossing rough.
- Heavy rain sends brown runoff into the water for a few days; Hawaii DOH posts Brown Water Advisories when it does.
Rules and wildlife
- Green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are protected: NOAA asks people to stay at least 10 ft (3 m) from turtles and 50 ft (15 m) from monk seals.
- Rules change: check Hawaii DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources before fishing anywhere.
